Before a developmental disorder or mental illness can be validated, the symptoms should be accountable for causing significant social, academic, medical and/or occupational impairment. The symptoms for the disorder(s) listed should be disregarded if they can better be attributed to a specific medical illness, prescriptive medication, medication withdrawal, substance abuse or another mental illness.
