Binge Eating Disorder | Body Dysmorphic Disorder | Bulemia Nervosa Binge Eating Disorder The term used for a condition where an individual has episodes of eating a great deal more than others and with less control than others. The individual eats rapidly, even when not hungry. The individual eats beyond satiation, often eats alone and is often self-critical about his/her eating binges. See Validation Statement. Body Dysmorphic Disorder The term used for a disorder where an individual has a morbid concern about a mild or imagined physical defect. See Validation Statement, Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorder and Somatoform Disorder. Bulemia Nervosa A term used for an individual who episodically loses control over the amount of food eaten and the time spent on eating during the episode. The individual usually compensates for the problem by inducing vomiting or by misusing laxatives, diuretics, fasting, other medications and excessive exercise. The eating frenzy occurs at least twice a week for more than 3 months. Unlike Anorexia Nervosa, individuals with Bulemia Nervosa may be only slightly underweight or even slightly overweight. It is uncommon among individuals with morbid obesity. Bulemia Nervosa should not be considered during a period of Anorexia Nervosa. A misperception of an undesirable body weight and shape is often the case with individuals who have Bulemia Nervosa. Bulemia is a complex disorder and is often present in individuals with coexistent mental disorders. It therefore, should be brought to the attention of a health care provider as it may present with a serious complication as a result of starvation or purging. See Validation Statement.
